The story of the Blazers’ outstanding 1986-87 season
The history of the Kamloops Blazers Hockey Organization consists of some incredible records, stats, and players. Kamloops is typically not a top contender for the Memorial Cup. However, the team always seems to consistently be in the top end of the league. With that being said, the Blazers have had numerous runs at the cup only to be stopped short only a handful of times in divisional playoffs. They have a rich history with a substantial amount of NHL-level talent and numerous statistics that showcase how the team has developed over the decades.
The Kamloops Blazers have had one memorable record that is said to be “etched in stone” with many individuals referring to the season as “Gretzky Good”. This record year put the Blazers hockey franchise on the map with the “Goals For” statistic of the 1986-87 season. With a record-setting tally of 496 goals. The Blazers had an average of 6.89 goals a game for the 72 game season.
Leading the 1986-87 Blazers and the Western Hockey League for most points is Rob Brown, with an astounding 212 points, 76 being goals with the remainder being assists. Rob Brown also went on to get the Most Valuable Player award, WHL inaugural plus-minus award and was the leading scorer of the WHL season.
